A Guided Ski Tour

Today it's home to ski trails, archery ranges, and soccer fields, but Kincaid Park once housed barbed wire fences, nuclear missiles, and fierce guard dogs.

In partnership with the Municipality of Anchorage and the Nordic Ski Association of Anchorage, Friends of Nike Site Summit is excited to offer another new way to experience Cold War History: a ski tour of Nike Site Point at Kincaid Park.

The tour will cross rolling terrain in Kincaid Park with frequent ups and downs. The tour will be conducted at a leisurely pace, but intermediate cross-country ski skills are required. Waxless touring skis are recommended; skate skis are discouraged.  Most of the tour is on groomed trails with classic tracks, with short portions on ungroomed but packed trails, and one foot crossing of Raspberry Road.

Route Description: Tour participants will meet inside the Wax Bunker for an introduction and safety brief, followed by a landscape and historical overview on the Chalet roof.  Participants will don skis outside the chalet and ski down to the soccer field and stadium area to view the launch bunkers and launch control buildings. The tour will then ascend via Elliott’s Climb to the World Cup Area to view the former Integrated Fire Control Building and barracks site. Participants will cross Raspberry Road at the upper tunnels and return to the Wax Bunker via Raspberry Multi-Use Trail. Total distance is 2.85 miles.

Participants should plan on spending up to three hours on this tour and come with face coverings, water, snacks and attire for all weather possibilities.  Due to potential liability, we ask that you please leave your pets at home.

Registration is a non-tax-deductible donation to FONSS. Total registration is limited to 25 participants aged 13 and older only (no babies in carriers) and will close once that limit has been reached.

Registrations must be completed by credit card on-line. If you prefer to register and then mail a check, please contact Friends of Nike Site Summit (FONSS) by e-mail at or by telephone at 907-929-9870 weekdays (leave message). Checks must be received by 1/20/22.  If a potential participant has contacted FONSS in advance to ensure space is available, same-day on-site registration is available on a cash-only basis.

Registration     Price Quantity

Adult 18+     $25.00
Student age 13 -17     $25.00

Safety of tour participants is the highest priority.  Tours may be cancelled or postponed on short notice due to dangerous weather conditions.  Should this occur, every attempt to reschedule the tour will be made.  If rescheduling is not possible, tour participants may request a full refund of their tour reservation, less any processing fees.

FONSS is a program of the Alaska Association for Historic Preservation (AAHP), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.  Your credit card receipt will indicate AAHP as the recipient.
