A Guided Ski Tour

Today it's home to ski trails, archery ranges, and soccer fields, but Kincaid Park once housed barbed wire fences, nuclear missiles, and fierce guard dogs.

In partnership with the Municipality of Anchorage and the Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage, Friends of Nike Site Summit is excited to offer another new way to experience Cold War History: a ski tour of Nike Site Point at Kincaid Park.

The tour will cross rolling terrain in Kincaid Park with frequent ups and downs. The tour will be conducted at a leisurely pace, but intermediate cross-country ski skills are required. Total tour distance is 2.85 miles. Light touring or classic skis are recommended and skate-skis are discouraged; metal-edged skis are not permitted on Kincaid trails.  Most of the tour is on groomed trails with classic tracks, with short portions on ungroomed but packed trails, and one foot crossing of Raspberry Road.

Route Description: Tour participants will meet inside the Kincaid Chalet for an introduction and safety brief, followed by a terrain orientation on the Chalet roof.  Participants will ski through the soccer field/stadium area to view launch bunkers and launch control buildings, traverse to the World Cup Start Area to view the former Integrated Fire Control Building and barracks site, then return to the stadium area via Raspberry Multi-Use Trail. The tour will conclude inside the Wax Bunker as participants learn about Site Point during the Great Alaska Earthquake of 1964.

Participants should plan on spending up to three hours on this tour and dress for variable weather.  Due to potential liability, we ask that you please leave your pets at home.

Registration is a non-tax-deductible donation to FONSS. Total registration is limited to 25 participants aged 12 and older only (no babies in carriers) and will close once that limit has been reached.

Registrations must be completed by credit card on-line.
