Self-Regulation Skills for School
2-Day Virtual Workshop
October 19 & 20, 2023 9:00am-3:00pm (Pacific Time)

Difficulties with self-regulation are a common challenge for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), significantly impacting learning and behaviour. Self-regulation skills at a young age have been linked to future achievements in school and life; therefore, teaching these skills must be a priority.  Questions that will be answered during this workshop include: Why and how do students with ASD struggle with self-regulation? How can I help my student to manage their emotions and maintain optimal school functioning? How do I teach my student and their peers to manage stress in social situations? What curricula can be used to teach self-regulation skills? By the end of this workshop, you will be equipped with a toolbox of skills and resources to structure the environment and teach strategies to help students self-regulate.

OBJECTIVES
Participants will:
  • Define self-regulation
  • Differentiate between self-regulation vs. co-regulation
  • Discuss how having ASD can affect one’s ability to self-regulate
  • Identify and discuss the 5 domains of Shanker’s model (biological, emotional, cognitive, social, pro-social)
  • Discuss self-regulation goals across domains
  • Review and explore curricula related to the development of self-regulation skills
  • Examine class-wide and individual strategies to improve students’ self-regulation that can address each of Shanker’s 5 domains (biological, emotional, cognitive, social, prosocial)
  • Develop a toolkit of self-regulation interventions and strategies for specific domains
  • Analyze case studies and identify evidence-based strategies to support self-regulation
  • Create an intervention plan based on case studies
AUDIENCE: This training is directed toward employees of BC school districts and independent schools. This includes teachers, paraprofessionals, and other educational staff supporting students with ASD at any grade level (K-12) in developing their social, academic, and adaptive skills.
