Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorders
This course will cover the following:
Theoretical Foundations
Characteristics of ASD
Diagnosis and assessment
Cognitive profiles and ranges of ability
Executive functions
Theory of mind
Sensory difference
Social and communication skills
Challenging behaviour
Effective instructional practices
Application of Theory to Classroom Practice
Behaviour observation
Data collection & analysis
Positive behaviour supports
Environmental/antecedent supports
Teaching approaches including:
direct instruction
differentiating curriculum
scaffolding
cognitive/behaviour interventions
augmentative communication
Participants will gain the basic understanding and skills needed to provide quality instruction and supports for students with ASD.
Audience: This training is directed toward employees of BC school districts and independent schools. This includes teachers, paraprofessionals, and other educational staff supporting students with ASD at any grade level (K-12) in developing their social, academic, and adaptive skills.

To use Zoom for this course, a reliable internet connection is required and laptop / computer are the recommended devices; device used must have a webcam and microphone (most have them built in). (NOTE: Using tablets / iPads / mobile phones are not recommended as they make submitting assignments difficult, and the small screen may make viewing course details challenging.)
Course workbook and materials will be mailed via Canada Post to the address you provide on the registration form.
The Zoom link for this course will be e-mailed to you at the end of the week prior to the start of the course.
Participants are expected to attend all sessions (certificate will only be issued if all sessions have been attended).
Course Fees
FEE update: As of February 1, 2021 POPARD has (temporarily) stopped charging fees for
this training. Refunds will be issued to those who have already registered and paid.
BC School District / BC Independent School Employees: $0 tuition (tuition is waived) + $75 non-refundable admin fee
Non-employees of BC school districts / BC independent schools: $300 tuition + $75 non-refundable admin fee (the $300 tuition fee is refundable if written notice of cancellation is emailed to training_lib@autismoutreach at least 14 days prior to day 1 of the training)
