Sharing an Autism Diagnosis and the Importance of Self-Advocacy
Virtual 1-hour POPARD Family School Liaison Workshop
Dec 19, 2024 (12:00-1:00pm)(PST)

Part of helping autistic children and youth increase their self-awareness and self-advocacy is sharing the diagnosis and exploring what this means to them. Research that includes the voices of autistic individuals offers valuable perspectives on this topic, as well as literature that provides parent experiences of sharing the information.  This session will:
  • Provide a review of the research on sharing a diagnosis with children and youth.
  • Discuss strategies and support for parents/caregivers to assist with the process of sharing.
  • Discuss the importance of self-advocacy for autistic individuals, including resources to support this.
