POPARD 7-Week Virtual Introduction to ASD FLEX Course

FLEX Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorders - for BC School Employees only

NOTE: The virtual ASD FLEX course covers the same content as POPARD's 5-Day Introduction to ASD course. School districts should consider both courses as equivalent for employment requirements. 

Course Overview 
This 7-week FLEXIBLE Introduction to ASD course is for employees of BC School Districts and BC Independent Schools. Through a combination of pre-recorded modules, independent/group work, and virtual 'live' sessions, participants will learn about ASD with an emphasis on applications relevant to the school setting. Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate showing 30 hours of learning. This course will be delivered through Canvas, a learning management system, and live sessions will be attended via Zoom.

Time Commitment
Participants must attend all seven mandatory live Zoom sessions listed below, and can expect to spend an additional 2 to 3 hours per week on self-learning modules. Self-learning times may vary depending on individual learning styles. There is also a mandatory pre-recorded course orientation module (allow approx 30 minutes) that must be completed prior to the first live session.

Mandatory Live Zoom Sessions for this course (seven total):
  • Tuesdays 4:00-6:30pm (Apr 5, Apr 12, Apr 19, Apr 26, May 3, May 10, May 17)
Participants are asked to arrive 15 minutes early to live sessions to allow time for check-in; sessions will start promptly at scheduled time.
Who this course is for: BC public and independent school teachers, paraprofessionals, and other educational staff supporting students with ASD at K-12 grade levels. You must register with your school district employee email address when registering for this course.*

Topics Covered
  • Introduction to Autism – developing a basic understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorders
  • Understanding Behaviour – understanding student characteristics and environmental influences that lead to challenging behaviour in the classroom
  • Changing Behaviour – positive programming and strategies to influence and improve student behaviour in the school setting
  • Communication & Social Competence Skills – identifying core social/communication deficits and providing strategies and resources to improve these skills
  • Life Skills – focus on teaching functional skills for daily living through modified programming, and preparing students for adulthood
Assessment Tools
  • Attendance and participation in all 7 mandatory live Zoom sessions
  • Completion of individual and group assignments, activities, discussions and final exam

Course Delivery + Technical Requirements
  • Participants will attend this virtual training using Canvas and Zoom
  • A laptop or desktop computer, equipped with a webcam and microphone, and a reliable internet connection are required for this course (tablets/iPads/iPhones are not suitable)
  • Canvas and Zoom information will be emailed to registrants during the week prior to the start of the course.
  • Participants must attend all sessions in full (certificate will only be issued if all sessions have been attended).

Course Fees, Cancellations, Refunds
  • Course fee for all participants: $50, payable upon registration
  • Cancellations: email training_lib@autismoutreach.ca if you have to cancel
  • Refunds: The course fee is refundable if written notice of cancellation (via email to training_lib@autismoutreach.ca) is received at least 3 weeks prior to the start of the course
  • Registrations are non-transferable
  • Registration closes on March 22, 2022 @ 9am

POPARD's English Language Policy + Other Policies
