1-Day Virtual POPARD Workshop
October 22, 2021 9am-3pm
Teaching Sexual Health to Students with ASD (This was originally a 2-day workshop, but has been changed to a 1-day workshop)
Learning about sexual health is necessary for all individuals, regardless of their ability. Persons with ASD are as diverse sexually as everyone else, however sexual health education is complicated by challenges in social communication and restricted interests or repetitive behaviours. This one-day introductory workshop will introduce to participants why teaching sexual health is important for students with ASD, ages 5 to 19. Participants will learn how to create developmentally appropriate goals for their student(s). In addition, a variety of strategies to teach these goals will be discussed. Participants will walk away with resources, lesson plans, and activities to use with their student(s).
Objectives Participants will:
Understand sexuality in the context of childhood development
Locate information from current research on sexuality and sexual education
Understand of the importance of explicitly teaching sexual health
Identify goals related to private vs. public behaviours, hygiene, social boundaries, personal space, friendships/dating, and safety
Understand how to create and implement curricula and supports based on knowledge of the student
Describe important skills instruction to be included in the students' program
Apply learned skills to create lesson plans and activities for students
Audience: This workshop is appropriate for any school staff and parents who want to understand how to better teach sexual health to all ages of students from 5-19. The workshop is particularly beneficial for those who can attend as a school team (e.g., the classroom teacher, case manager, and EAs).
