The purpose of the Citizens’ Academy is to increase awareness of the daily operations of the Oakwood Village Police Department (OVPD). This instruction is not intended to make citizens into a police officer; but to become an informed citizen as to the actual role of the police. All instruction is done by veteran police officers and certified instructors.
The Citizens’ Police Academy is our opportunity to show how serious our commitment is to the community. It is our hope graduates take their knowledge into the community, educate others when the opportunity arises and make positive decisions affecting the Village and OVPD with keen awareness and better information.
Students will also complete a 2-hour ride along with an officer before graduation.
Students will learn and have hands on demonstrations on the following topics:
- Search & Seizures
- Investigations and Fingerprinting
- Patrol Operations
- Use of Force
- Traffic Stops
- Firearm Safety
- Virtual Scenario Training
- Impaired Driving
- Police Equipment
- K9 Handling & Mutual Aid Response
